• Family Hawaiian Luau Send-Off Party

April 20, 2020

Our son and his girlfriend had been quarantining with us for almost a month and they were set to return home to Texas the next day.  I looked at my daughter, Chloie and she looked at me. It occurred to both of us that we had all the fixings to do a Hawaiian Luau party, and it was a perfect way to wish them well.

The last day of their time with us, Chloie and I got to work like busy bees collecting every lei, napkin and grass skirt we could find.  There were even a couple coconut bras we used on the centerpiece!

Everyone had a lei to wear on their chair at the table.  The decor was really a mix of vintage and present day island decor.  Luckily, we had a stash from a Hawaiian Day theme from a family reunion, and the placemats I dug out had great burlap texture with palms painted on.

Raffia chargers with wooden bead trim set the tone for the Pottery Barn Rope melamine dinner plates (linked in my Shop My Feed on the blog).  These plates and my bamboo flatware are a staple in the summer at Pottery Barn and you can click here to get a limited time discounted offer on both on my Liketoknowit account!

Our bar became an instant Tiki Lounge with the grass skirts, and Chloie made pina coladas from all natural ingredients, which made them taste like we were in the Caribbean!  LOL! These are on the blog.

To get a pina colada, each person had to put on a lei, which was an easy ticket to celebrate.

Even Lucy got in on the act! She actually wore her lei all day.  I thought it was the perfect color with her brown fur, right?!

And finally, Chloie  cut off the top of the pineapple for decoration on the appetizer platter. Cheeses, hummus, raspberries and crackers were a welcome treat as we all waited for dinner to finish cooking.

Our Luau Menu

Grilled Salmon

Roasted Green Beans

Wild Rice Casserole

Asian Cabbage Salad

All of these recipes can be found separately on the blog.  They were quick and easy quarantine-style dishes that we threw together so that we could enjoy the evening with our family without too much distraction in the kitchen.

So glad we have the memories from this quarantine time - a silver lining in all of this pandemic hardship. And this party was a fun way to end our time with the whole family being together.
